In collaboration with UK-based artist, Catherine Li, this project was originally conceived as part of a group show, exploring how power structure may shape and transform public spaces in our urban cityscapes. In our response, we had decided to make an observational film set in the flea markets of Singapore and the UK––in an attempt to blur the lines between inside and outside; moving away from the centre to the periphery and back; renders the boundaries between an interior and exterior gaze porous. In my segment, the film depicts a community of street vendors operating from inside a shelter––further delineates the invisible borders embedded in public spaces, visualising how power structure can engulf the city; while at the same time people may take over and influence the built environment once inhabiting the space.
